Issue Position: Defense and National Security

Issues: Defense

One of the few and narrowly defined powers of the federal government is national defense. As a veteran, I do not take the decision to go to war lightly. We have an executive branch that is growing out of control and Congress needs to reign the presidency in by asserting its powers as provided under the Constitution. We should not go to war unless our national security interests are directly at risk, we should not go to war to fight the battles of other countries, and we should not go to war to risk the blood of our young men and women without authorization from the people through a Congressional Declaration of War.

My opponent voted to weaken our military and cut hard-earned veterans' benefits. As a friend of veterans and a veteran myself, supporting those who risked life and limb to protect the freedoms we enjoy in this country will be my top priority in Congress.
